BCL men swoop on RU hall
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Rajshahi University yesterday beat up four students and handed them over to police as suspected activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Humayun Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station, said they produced three of them before a court after showing them arrested in a case for destructive activities, while treating the other at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital under their custody.
Both police and BCL activists said they were planning destructive activities.
The arrestees were Abdullah, master's student of zoology; Rakibul Hasan and Abu Sayed, fourth-year students of management studies; and Saddam Hossain, second-year student of mathematics, and Rakibul Hasan.
Rakibul was being treated at RMCH.
Witnesses said the BCL men caught the four from Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall between Monday night and early yesterday and beat them up with iron rods and sticks.
BCL's RU unit Vice President Mehedi Hasan Rasel said they were involved with Shibir. "We handed them over to police after a little beating," he added.
Ekram Ullah, the hall provost, said police would take legal steps against the arrestees.
The incident created panic among the admission seekers staying on the campus.
