A Dhaka court fixed March 6 to decide whether it will frame charges against Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of ruling Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, in connection with the double murder in the capital's New Eskaton area last year.

After hearing a discharge petition filed by the defence, Judge Shamsunnahar Begum of Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court set the date for passing the order in Rony's presence.

During today's hearing, Rony's lawyer Kazi Nozib Ullah Hiru told the court that his client was implicated in the case as part of conspiracy to harass him.

"Rony was not in the vehicle during the time of occurrence. So, I appealed to the court to discharge my client of the murder charge," Kazi Nozib said.

On the other hand, Additional Public Prosecutor SM Zahid Sardar prayed to the court to frame charge against the accused as the charges brought against him were primarily proved.

Rony allegedly fired random shots in the air from his jeep for "being frustrated over post-midnight traffic" on New Eskaton Road on April 14, leaving a rickshaw-puller and an auto-rickshaw driver dead.

The incident didn't draw much attention at first. But as the media ran reports on Rony's involvement in the incident, it created a huge public outcry.

Earlier on August 13, 2015, a Dhaka court accepted the charges against the accused.
