Garo Student Union (Gasu) yesterday hanged rapists in effigies during a rally on the Dhaka University campus, demanding death penalty for all rapists, including the ones who raped a Garo woman in the capital on May 21.

The demonstrators also condemned police failure to arrest the perpetrators of sexual assault incidents including the mass molestation of women during Pahela Boishakh celebration and sexual harassment of a class-I student of Mohammadpur preparatory girls' school. 

They also demanded that death sentence or life imprisonment be the punishment for every rapist, sexual assault trials be held at speedy trial tribunals, rape case trials be adjudicated within one year, and security be ensured for female students and working women.

The 21-year-old indigenous woman was waiting for a bus in the capital when a group of people dragged her into a microbus and gang-raped her.
