HC asks Buet to allow expelled BCL men to attend classes

The High Court today directed the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) authorities to allow its four expelled students, also leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League, to avail all student facilities including attending classes and examinations.

The four were expelled for allegedly assaulting Prof Jahangir Alam of civil engineering department of the university on April 12 for his "provocative" Facebook post on the execution of war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

Among them, Buet's BCL President Shuvro Jyoti Tikadar and its General Secretary Abu Syed Konok, both fourth year mechanical engineering students, were expelled from the institution.

Protik Dutta, a third year electrical and electronics engineering student, was expelled for two semesters while Golam Saqlain Ratul, a third year computer science and engineering student, was expelled from Ahsanullah Hall, their lawyer Sakib Rezwan Kabir told The Daily Star.

He said the Board of Residence and Discipline (BRD) of Buet took the expulsion decision on April 20 and its Academic Council upheld it on May 2 without mentioning the allegations against the BCL leaders.

The HC today also issued four separate rules upon the authorities of the government and Buet to explain as to why the expulsion should not be declared illegal.

The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the orders and rules after hearing four separate writ petitions.

The expelled BCL leaders can now continue pursuing their academic carriers following the HC order, Barrister Sakib said.
