HC wants report on eviction along Karnaphuli

The High Court has sought a report on the eviction drive targeting illegal structures along Karnaphuli river in Chattogram.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury Justice Md Ashraful Kamalasked Chattogram Port Authority (CPA)to report in 30 days.

The order came after hearing a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

During hearing, petitioner’s lawyer ManzillMurshid informed the court that some of the illegal structures were demolished on the river bank following a HC directive given in 2016.

But there are many still standing, which need to be demolished, he said.

Following the 2016 HC order, the Chattogram district administration started a drive on the Karnaphuli river bank in the port city to demolish illegal structures.

On August 16, 2016, the HC directed the authorities concerned to remove 2,181 structures illegally built on the banks of the River Karnaphuli in Chattogram.
