Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity Secretary General Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury was released from Dhaka Central Jail tonight.

Shamsuddin Chowdhury, a member of Jatri Kalyan Samity’s executive committee, told The Daily Star that Mozammel was released from the jail in Dhaka’s Keraniganj at 8:36 pm.

Upon his release, Mozammel thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and judges for releasing him from “false cases. “I am a victim of vengeance of a vested quarter in the transport sector,” Mozammel said.

A Dhaka court today rejected a petition filed for showing Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, arrested in a case filed under Explosive Substances Act.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mazharul Islam passed the order after Sub-inspector of Kafrul Police Station Kazi Raihanur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, produced Mozammel before the court with the prayer.

On Monday, Raihanur filed a petition with the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka to show Mozammel arrested in a case filed for creating anarchy and sought a 10-day remand for Mozammel.

The case, filed with Kafrul police on February 4, accuses more than 50 people of creating anarchy. Mozammel's name was not included in the First Information Report (FIR).

Earlier, a Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to Mozammel in an extortion case. However, he could not walk out of jail as Kafrul police on Monday appealed to a court to show him arrested in a case filed under Explosive Substances Act.

The police arrested Mozammel, secretary general of a platform working for passengers' rights, from his Sanarpar residence in Narayanganj on September 6, two days after the extortion case was filed with Mirpur police.

In the case statement, complainant Md Dulal alleged that Mozammel, claiming to be a transport leader, demanded Tk 2 lakh from him and took Tk 10,000 from him in front of Sony Cinema in Mirpur on September 3.

Mozammel was placed on one-day remand for interrogation hours after the arrest.
