JCD leader shot in ‘gunfight’ with cops
A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader was shot in an alleged gunfight with police at Moghbazar in Dhaka today.
Rabiul Islam Nayan, 28, joint convener of the Mohammadpur unit of the party, was bullet-hit in his left thigh.
Talking to journalists at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Rabiul claimed that Ramna police took him away when he was chatting with his friends in front of a hotel in Moghbazar area and shot at his leg.
However, the police denied the allegation and accused Nayan of shooting first.
Acting on a tip-off, the law enforcers went to Moghbazar to arrest Nayan, a fugitive accused in several cases, said Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station.
Sensing the police, Nayan shot at them, and the police retaliated triggering a gunfight that left him bullet wounded, said the OC.
Ramna Police admitted Nayan to DMCH around 1:30pm.
The OC described Nayan as an associate of top criminal Subrata Bain and accused in several vandalism and arson cases filed during the BNP-led opposition's agitation programmes.
In a press statement this evening, JCD condemned ''the shooting of its leader''.
