Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have cut short its central ‘Mangal Shobhajatra (procession of good wishes)’ on the campus marking the Bangla New Year 1426, mourning the death of an English department student Saturday night.

Nuruzzaman Nibvrit, a third-year student of the English department, died after he suffered a cardiac arrest around 10:30pm on Saturday, our campus correspondent reports.

The student died of cardiac arrest and was brought dead, said Dr Haranath Sarker, a duty doctor at Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar.

JU acting Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan said they have decided to trim down the central celebration programme of the university mourning the untimely demise of the student.

Only, the students of the faculty of fine arts brought out a procession wearing black badges, he said.

DEMO FOR MODERN MEDICAL CENTRE

Meanwhile, some students of JU postponed their demonstration after the university’s Pro-VC (administration) Professor Amir Hussain and Pro-VC (education) Professor Nurul Alam assured them of meeting their demands.

The students have been staging a sit-in on the university’s Central Shaheed Minar premises since last night demanding a full-fledged medical centre on the campus, reports our JUcorrespondent.

They said the university medical centre lacks modern equipment, necessary medicines required to respond to an emergency.

“Whenever any of us falls sick, we are referred to Enam Medical College. The university medical centre lacks the capability to handle an emergency situation,” said Yasin Arafat Borno of Anthropology department.

Raising the same demand, around hundred students stood in two separate human chains in front of the Shaheed Minar and university medical premises at noon.
