Transport leaders meet home boss over RTA

Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation tonight held a meeting with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to meet their demands of bringing amendment to the Road Transport Act-2018.

The meeting started at the home minister’s Dhanmondi residence around 9:10pm and ended around 11:40pm, our correspondent reports from the spot.

After emerging from the meeting, the home minister briefed reporters about the outcome of the meeting.

Around 30 leaders led by Shajahan Khan, executive president of the federation, took part in the meeting.

The meeting was held amid huge unrest among transport workers over execution of the new law from November 17, two weeks after the law came into effect officially.

Transport workers went on a wildcat strike in different districts from Monday, while truck workers and owners called an indefinite strike on Tuesday, demanding amendments to the law.

However, the strike was called off on Thursday as the home minister assured them of meeting their demands.

The 'Road Transport Bill-2018' was passed in parliament on September 19 last year with provision for maximum five years' jail for any death or serious injury caused by reckless driving.
