Detective Branch (DB) today claimed to have arrested a member of the transnational syndicate that involved in selling firearms into grey market after smuggling those from India.

Police arrested Hafizur Rahman from the premises of Korea Technical Training Centre in Dhaka’s Mirpur around 10:00 pm yesterday, said Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB (north) police.

Four foreign-made firearms and 17 rounds of bullets were recovered from his possession, said Mashiur Rahman at a press conference at DMP media centre today.

The police official said Hafizur used to smuggle illegal firearms and bullets to Bangladesh from India via Benapole border along with his two associates -- Habibur Rahman Bishwas and Zillur.      

Later, he used to reach the firearms and bullets to Dhaka and other places, said Mashiur Rahman.

The supplied firearms were used to sell at a high price to different persons in Bangladesh, said the police official.

The illegal firearms had been using in various subversive activities including the creation of political instability, calimed Mashiur.

Besides, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit today claimed to have arrested four members of militant outfit Neo-JMB from the capital’s Ramna area.

The arrestees were identified as Arif Mollah, 28, Ilias Hossain alias Mithu, 28, Md Forhad Ali alias Fuad, 31, and Muntasim Billah alias Sabbir, 21.

Based on the information, CTTC team arrested the four in front of Ramna Star Gate around 5:45 pm on Monday with cell phone and books on extremism, Saiful Islam, deputy commissioner of CTTC unit, told The Daily Star.
