Speakers at a human chain today demanded that both the Dhaka city mayors step down from their posts if they cannot check mosquitos and the recent dengue outbreak in the capital.

They also demanded that the government take effective measures regarding mosquito control, keeping the city clean, and providing proper treatment to the patients who are suffering from the mosquito-borne deadly disease.

Gourab’71, a platform of cultural and social activists, organised the human chain in front of the National Museum at the capital’s Shahbagh intersection.

Speaking at the event, noted cultural personality Golam Kuddus said dengue has become a matter of panic to almost all the families living in Dhaka.

But in this context, the role that the city mayors are playing is unacceptable. Besides, their indifference and irresponsible comments have made people angry, said Kuddus, also president of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote (SSJ), a coalition of cultural activists.

“Will we be free of dengue if we keep our home clean? Did you do your part -- clean the drains?” he asked, mentioning both the Dhaka south and north city corporations.

Calling upon the mayors to immediately take effective steps to protect the city dwellers from mosquitos, he said, “If you fail to do so, people will not spare you.”

Syed Ishtiaque Reza, editor-in-chief of Gazi Television (GTV), said mosquito control is the key responsibility of the mayors at the current situation, besides whatever other works they do.

“If they cannot do it properly, then they should resign acknowledging their failure,” he added.

The noted journalist also criticised the mayors for denying media reports on the recent dengue outbreak.

Gulshan Ara Urmy, a mother whose daughter died of dengue recently, said the mayors have no scope to avoid their responsibilities behind the cause of her daughter’s death.

“Only those who have lost their beloved ones can feel the pain,” she said.

Among others, Gourab’71 President Monirul Islam and General Secretary FM Shaheen also spoke at the human chain.
