One held for murder attempt on Sarwar Ali
Law enforcers arrested a boy in connection with an attack on Liberation War Museum Trustee Dr Sarwar Ali at his home in the capital’s Uttara on January 5, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) said today.
The arrestee, Md Forhad, 18, a day labourer, took part in the attacker with others after being lured by one Nazmul Hossain, a former driver of Sarwar, said Bashir Ahmed, special superintendent of PBI (Dhaka metro).
At a press briefing at the PBI office today, Bashir said the arrestee was outside the building when two attackers went to Sarwar’s house on the night of January 5.
“So far we have found that it was a case of robbery. If we can arrest the other attackers including the mastermind, we will be sure whether there was any other motive,” Bashir said replying to a query.
Quoting the arrestee, the PBI officials also said that mastermind Nazmul, who is on the run, told them (attackers) that there were money and gold ornaments at Sarwar’s house and promised to share those with them after the robbery.
The attackers held at least two meetings at two hotels in Ashkona area on January 4 and January 5 before carrying out the attack, they said.
Apart from Nazmul, the law enforcers have identified five other persons involved with the attack and police are trying to arrest them, said the PBI officials.
On January 5, two criminals attempted to kill Dr Sarwar Ali at his home in Dhaka’s Uttara area.
Although Sarwar escaped unhurt, his wife Makhduma Nargis, daughter Sayma Ali, son-in-law Humayun Kabir and two of his neighbours sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Later, police detained the security guard of the building and a driver of one of the residents of the building for interrogation.
