A Dhaka court today granted bail to a police inspector in connection with a case filed for making derogatory remarks on social media about parliament whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury.

Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of the Cyber Tribunal passed the order after Police Inspector Mahmud Saiful Karim surrendered this noon.

On September 25 last year, Jatiya Sangsad Whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury filed a case against Mahmud Saiful Karim alias Saif Amin under the Digital Security Act.

Inspector Md Najmul Nishat of police's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit submitted a probe report in this case on February 10 this year. Two days later, the tribunal took cognisance of the charges and issued an arrest warrant against Saiful.

Shamsul, an Awami League lawmaker of Chattogram-12, alleged that Amin circulated false and fabricated information about him in a Facebook post on September 21.

After that, police headquarters suspended Saiful from the Armed Police Battalion in Uttara. He has been working with the Rangpur Range since then.

Action was taken against Saiful for breaching discipline, misconduct, and damaging the image of the force, according to the PHQ.
