Probe report on Biman ‘hijack’ attempt submitted

A five-member probe committee formed by the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry today submitted its report on the “plane hijacking” incident at Chattogram airport on February 24.

Chief of the probe body Md Mokabbir Hossain, also additional secretary of the ministry, submitted the report to the ministry this afternoon, Civil Aviation Secretary Mohidul Haque told The Daily Star.

Replying to a query about what is in the report, the secretary said he has not seen it yet.

“State minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali is currently abroad. It is expected that after he returns to the country, he would hold a press briefing for disclosing the details of the probe report,” the secretary said.

On February 25, Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry formed the probe committee to investigate the “plane hijacking” incident at Chattogram airport.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines made an emergency landing at Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport on the evening of February 24 after Polash Ahmed, a passenger of the flight, allegedly attempted to hijack the plane.

He was killed later in an eight-minute operation by members of the army’s para-commando unit.
