Promode Mankin passes away
State Minister for Social Welfare Promode Mankin died of cancer while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India early yesterday, aged 77.
Promode, the lone elected MP from Garo and Christian community, died at the Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai around 3:30am.
He was undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Singapore, Bangladesh and India for the last few months.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep condolences over his death.
Mankin was elected a lawmaker of Awami League from Mymensingh-constituency for four times. He left behind his wife, five daughters, a son and a host of relatives and well-wishers.
Born on April 18, 1939 at Ramnagar village in Durgapur of Netrakona, he was the state minister for cultural affairs from July 2009 to September 2012.
His body would be brought back around noon today an taken to his Bailey Road residence first, then at Central Shaheed Minar for tributes and afterwards at the south plaza of Jatiya Sangshad around 5:00pm, Md Tofazzal Hossain, personal officer to the minister, told The Daily Star.
He said Mankin would be buried tomorrow at his village. Earlier on September 14, Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali died at a Singapore Hospital. With the death of the duo, the ministry will have no minister until assigned by the premier.
