RMG worker beaten to death in Malibagh over ‘theft’
A worker of a ready-made garment (RMG) factory today died after he was severely beaten on allegation of theft in Malibagh area of Dhaka last night.
The victim was identified as Delwar Hossain Sayeed, a cutting assistant of Easy Fashion factory in Chowdhurypara of Malibagh, reports our staff correspondent quoting police.
The victim’s fellow workers staged a blockade on Rampura Road for one and half hour this afternoon protesting the death, which created a long tailback in the area.
Delwar allegedly stayed back in the factory building’s fifth floor after it was closed for the day yesterday. Later around midnight, a resident of the area reportedly saw him throwing t-shirts out of the window and informed the security guards of the factory, Anisur Rahman, deputy commissioner of police (Tejgaon Division), told The Daily Star.
The guards informed the manager of the factory of the matter and beat Delwar indiscriminately after finding him inside the building, the police official said, adding that Delwar was kept inside the factory building overnight after the beating.
On information, police rescued him from the factory around 11:00am today and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries around 12:00pm, the deputy commissioner said.
Police arrested three people in connection with the killing, he added.
