The Supreme Court today stayed a High Court order that granted bail to Nur Mohammad, chairman of Khan Jahan Ali Ltd, in the case filed over the liquid cocaine that was seized from a container carrying sun-flower oil at Chittagong port in May last year.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the stay order following a petition filed by the government challenging the HC order that granted bail to Nur Mohammad.

The chamber judge also sent the stay petition to the full bench of the apex court and fixed July 14 for its hearing there.

Nur Mohammad cannot get released from jail following the SC order, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters.

The customs intelligence detected the cocaine in a liquid substance inside a barrel that weighed 185 kg, which was imported from Bolivia along with 106 other barrels on May 12 last year. The other barrels reportedly carried sunflower oil.

A case was filed with Bandar Police Station on June 27 that year in connection with the seizure.

Following a bail petition filed by accused Nur Mohammad, the HC on June 16 granted him bail in the case for six months.

The government recently filed a petition with the SC seeking stay on the HC order.
