SC upholds HC verdict to stop using tannery waste

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court verdict directing the government to stop functioning of the poultry and fish feed factories that are using tannery waste in Hazaribagh area of Dhaka.

The apex court also affirmed the HC directive that asked the authorities concerned of the government to prepare a guideline to monitor and control whether tannery waste is being used in poultry and fish feed production in any manner.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain gave the order dismissing a leave to appeal petition.

Golam Saruar, proprietor of Shoeb Enterprise, a poultry-feed producing factory, filed the leave to appeal petition with the apex court challenging the HC verdict of July 21, 2011 following a writ petition.

Yesterday, the apex court dismissed the petition, as no lawyer appeared for Saruar.

Petitioner's lawyer Manzill Murshed told The Daily Star that the functions of the factories using tannery waste for producing poultry and fish feed will have to be closed following the SC order.

Some of the factories producing poultry and fish feed using tannery waste have been shut down following the HC verdict, he added.
