Sohel Rana’s mother lands in jail after surrender

A Dhaka court today sent to jail the mother of Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana in a graft case filed over the building collapse that killed over a thousand people in 2013.

Earlier in the day, Morzina Begum surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission in 2014.

Dhaka Divisional Special Judge Court Judge M Atoar Rahman passed the order after hearing.

At least 1,135 people, mostly readymade garment workers, died in the biggest workplace disaster of the century in Bangladesh’s Savar on April 24, 2013 when multistoried Rana Plaza caved in.

Allegations were that the workers were forced to enter the building, owned by Sohel Rana, that had developed cracks a day before the disaster.

ACC filed a case against 17 people including Sohel Rana and his mother on June 15, 2014 over unlawful construction of three additional floors of Rana Plaza that had clearance of upto sixth floor.

Charge sheet in the case was filed within a month on July 16, 2014.

Morzina Begum was on the run since filing of the case. She surrendered today and landed in jail.
