Hazing Freshmen: Sust expels 2, suspends 3, fines 16 students
The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) yesterday expelled two of its students for hazing six freshmen on February 15.
Sust also handed down different forms of punishments to 19 other students for their involvement in the same incident. The decision was taken at a meeting of the syndicate, said Proctor Prof Jahirul Islam.
The two expelled students are Hamidur Rahman Rangan and Ashiq Ahmed Himel from civil and environmental engineering (CEE) department.
Among the 21 punished students, 20 are from the CEE department, another from political studies department. All of them are second year first semester students. Two of them, Mahmudul Hasan and Shahriar Jaman Rahi, were given two years' suspension along with a fine of Tk 10,000 each. One of their fellows, Istiaque Ahmed, was given 1 year's suspension and Tk 10,000 fine. Each of the other five were fined Tk 6,000 each, nine of them Tk 3,000 while two were given warnings only.
