18 RMG workers hurt
Eighteen readymade garment workers, including nine women, were injured in an attack by transport workers and CNG filling station employees in Savar yesterday.
Around 65 workers of Ahmed Fashion Ltd were going to their workplace in the capital's Technical area from Savar by bus, said several of the injured.
On the way, the bus driver and a trucker had an altercation regarding overtaking. When the bus reached Jorpul area, the truck halted the bus. The trucker got off his driving seat and started beating up the bus driver, they said.
At that time, the RMG workers protested against it, prompting staffers of nearby Lalon CNG Filling Station and transport workers to join the trucker, said the RMG workers. The attackers beat them with bamboos and rods, they alleged.
Soon after, a team of police patrolling the area brought the situation under control.
An employee the filling station and two transport workers were detained, said Hassan Al Mamun, sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station.
The injured were treated at Savar Upazila Health Complex, said its doctors.
Confessing to the attack, Shaon Hossain, son of the filling station's owner, told The Daily Star that it was a “misunderstanding” and they took the responsibility of the workers' treatment.
