3 CU students hurt in 'rival group attack'

Three indigenous students of Chittagong University, members of a Chittagong Hill Tracts-based indigenous group, came under attack today allegedly by members of a rival group.

Neutun Chakma, Amrito Chakma, first and second-year students of Pali, and Shabinoy Chakma, fourth-year student of Bangla, were all members of Parbatya Chattagram Pahari Chhatra Parishad.

They are now attending treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, our campus correspondent reports quoting Alauddin, an assistant sub-inspector of the hospital’s police outpost.

The incident took place around 11:00am.

Shunayan Chakma, president of Greater Chittagong Hill Tracts Hill Students Council of CU, claimed that about 20 members of the campus unit of Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP), student wing of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Sanghstha (PCJSS), attacked them with sharp weapons at their house in Gate No. 2.

According to him, an altercation of yesterday at campus triggered the attack this morning.

Monosri Chakma, secretary of campus unit PCP, claimed that members of his party foiled an abduction attempt on one of their members.

6 hurt in BCL infighting

At least six activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were injured when two factions of the party clashed over establishing supremacy on the CU campus this afternoon.

According to the witnesses, the clash ensued as some supporters of late Chittagong city unit Awami League leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury beat up a follower of the city’s AL leader AJM Nasir Uddin following an altercation occurred in the morning.

Around 200 students from the two sides equipped with home-made weapons took position in front of Shahjalal Hall around 4:30pm.

A chase and counter-chase took place between the two factions when they attacked each other, leaving the six BCL men injured.

Police later brought the situation under control firing teargas shells, our CU correspondent reports. 

Three of the injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
