41 more women-children repression prevention tribunals approved

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has approved the formation of 41 new “Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman (Women and Children Repression Prevention) Tribunals” in different districts across the country in order to quickly dispose of cases filed for torturing women and children.

Currently 54 “Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunals” are dealing with the cases filed over the torture against women and children.

More than 1.5 lakh such cases are now pending with lower courts concerned across the country, Supreme Court sources said.  

The premier also endorsed 246 posts of judges and staff for the newly created 41 Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunals and their equipments including transports, said a law ministry press release, adding that the relevant documents reached to the law ministry yesterday.      

Contacted, Law Minister Anisul Huq told The Daily Star today that the government will very soon appoint the judges and staff for the newly created 41 tribunals.

He hoped that the rate of disposal of the cases filed over the torture against women and children will be increased and the sufferings of the litigants will be reduced after the new tribunals will function.

Earlier in August last year, the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance had given consent to the law ministry’s proposal for creating the 246 posts for the offices of 41 Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Tribunals, their equipments and transports.

According to the finance division’s consent letter there is no tribunals in 12 districts. The districts are Rajbari, Gopalganj, Magura, Feni, Laxmipur, Khagrachhari, Lalmonirhat, Joypurhat, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Pirojpur and Bhola.
