6-member Bangladesh team to participate in 59th Int’l Math Olympiad
A team of six members from Bangladesh is going to participate in the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Romania this year.
This is the fourth time Bangladesh is going to participate in the IMO.
The participants are Ahmed Jawad Chowdhury from Cantonment English School and College in Chittagong, Rahul Saha from Dhaka College, Tamjid Morshed Rubab, Joydeep Saha and Tahnik Noor Samin from Notre Dame College (NDC) in Dhaka, and Soumitra Das from Police Lines High School in Faridpur.
Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee (BMOC) announced their names at a press conference in the capital’s Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel today.
This year the Olympiad will take place from July 3-14 and the Bangladesh team will leave the country today to participate in the competition.
Introducing the participants, President of the BMOC Committee Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury said, “Our students have achieved a total of 6 silver medals, 19 bronze medals and 25 honourary awards from the IMO till now. We hope, this year they will also make us proud.”
IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for high school students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. This year, a total of 615 competitors of 116 countries will participate in the competition.
Munir Hasan, general secretary of BMOC, and Abdul Qayyum, associate editor of Prothom Alo, were also present during the press conference.
