AL trying to split 20-party alliance: Fakhrul

Ruling Awami League is trying to divide the unity of 20-party alliance, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.

“If Awami League had not become a bankrupt political party it would not be involved in splitting the opposition parties,” he told a gathering in Dhaka.

He was speaking at the tri-annual council of Banlgadesh Labour Party.

His comments come on the heels of Islami Oikya Jote leaving the BNP-led 20-party, splitting itself during the decision, which insiders said was under pressure from the government.

Mentioning AL’s prior contribution as a pro-democracy and its role during Liberation War, Fakhrul said: “When we see this party engaging in splitting opposition, it seems the party has become politically bankrupt.”

“The government is claiming that the country is flooded with development, but in reality it’s all corruption,” alleged Fakhrul.

Last Thursday, Islami Oikya Jote, during their convention, declared to quit the BNP-led alliance. Their chief said it was because of organisational interest of the party.

However, a faction of the Islamist party remained with the 20-party alliance.
