‘Cattle lifter’ beaten dead in Faridpur
An alleged cattle lifter was beaten dead by a mob in Faridpur’s Sadar upazila early today.
The deceased is Russel Sheikh, 29, son of Yunus Sheikh of Bilmahmudpur village in the same upazila, our Faridpur correspondent reports quoting Chairman of Aliabad Union Parishad Omar Faruk.
Russel along with his four associates reached Sadipur village with a truck around 3:30am and went to the house of one Nuruddin for stealing his cattle, the UP chairman said.
Sensing their presence, Nuruddin, an expatriate in Singapore, raised a hue and cry, seeking help from the villagers.
At one stage, locals rushed to the spot and managed to catch Russel. They gave him good while the others managed to flee the scene, the chairman said.
Russel was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.
The mob also torched the truck, he added.
Confirming the incident, Sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Nazrul Islam said they sent the body to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Shaheed Sheikh, a resident of Sadipur village, told our correspondent that cattle lifting increased in the union and at least 13 cattle were lifted in the area the last month.
