Canada today said it would give 200,000 Canadian dollars to provide immediate assistance to people in Bangladesh in response to severe flooding caused by monsoon rains.

The aid will be provided through the Emergency Disaster Assistance Fund which will assist the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in providing relief to the flood-affected people in the country, according to a press release of the High Commission of Canada in Dhaka.

This support will focus on the delivery of an essential package of interventions and disaster risk reduction for vulnerable flood-affected households, the press release read.

Many northern and north-eastern districts of Bangladesh were inundated by the flood caused by onrush of water from upstream and incessant rainfall, affecting over four million people.

Not just Bangladesh, more than 24 million people have been affected by some of the worst flooding to hit South Asia in decades, with large areas of land submerged in water.
