Flood situation worsens in Kurigram

Flood water engulfed fresh areas in Kurigram worsening conditions of the affected people in the district.

Whereas, flood-hit people's suffering intensified due to insufficient supply of relief materials in Lalmonirhat where overall flood situation remained unchanged.

KURIGRAM

Water levels of four rivers rose in last six hours from 12:00am today, according to the control room of Water Development Board, Kurigram.

The water level of the Dharla river at Dharla bridge point in Sadar upazila rose 13cm till 6:00am today. As a result, the water was flowing 75cm above the danger level at the point, our local correspondent reports quoting government officials there.

Water of the Brahmaputra river also rose to 19cm at Chilmari Ghat Point in Chilmari upazila resulting in water flowing at 68cm above the danger level here.

River water in the Teesta has increased by 6cm resulting in water flowing 22cm above the danger level at Kaunia Ghat Point of Rangpur’s Kaunia upazila.

Dudh Kumar river at Noon Khaowa Point of Kurigram Sadar upazila saw 19cm rise in the water level and the water of the river is flowing 35cm above the danger level.

More people are affected from the flash flood in the district and the authorities are making new lists for distributing government relief, reports our local correspondent quoting district administration sources.

LALMONIRHAT

Overall flood situation in Lalmonirhat remained unchanged as the water level, still staying above the danger level, of two major rivers -- Teesta and Dharla -- did not rise any further today.

Over one lakh people of 80 villages of five upazilas are marooned due to flash flood and they are now facing acute crisis of food and drinking water as the government relief is insufficient, our local correspondent reports.

Ali Haider, district relief and rehabilitation officer of Lalmonirhat told our correspondent that 110 metric tonnes of rice, 600 packets of dry food items and Tk 2,00,000 have already been distributed among the flood victims.

“We still have 304 metric tonnes of rice in our stock which would be distributed from today,” he said adding that they have already sent a letter to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief seeking additional relief materials.

However, one flood victim Soleman Miah,65, from Kutirpar village in Aditmari upazila said, they are living in acute crisis of food and drinking water but nobody visited them and they did not get any relief either.

Another flood victim Nabir Uddin,63, from Gaddimari village of Hatibandha upazila also told our correspondent that they did not receive any relief and are living in inhuman condition on the road.

Meanwhile, water level of the two rivers improved on Saturday but due to continuous rain the level has risen again, Sub-Divisional Engineer Water Development Board (Lalmonirhat) Bajle Karim said.

"It is not possible right now to repair the damaged flood control dykes for which the flash flood worsened. So we are dumping geo bags in most vulnerable points to save the dykes, he added.
