Moderate to heavy rainfall, triggered by land depression over the Bay, has been continuing throughout the country including capital Dhaka, disrupting normal life in the city and elsewhere in the country since this morning.

Residents of Khulna, Barisal and Dhaka divisions witnessed the most downpours as the Met office recorded 90mm, 86mm and 76mm rainfall in the three divisions respectively from 6:00am to 6:00pm, UNB reports quoting Sarwar Alam, assistant meteorologist of Dhaka Met office.

The Met office also recorded 47 millimetres rainfall in Rajshahi division, 40mm in Mymensingh, 25mm in Rangpur, 14mm in Chittagong divisions and six mm in Sylhet division in last 12 hours, Sarwar told UNB.

According to the weather forecast of Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the depression over west central Bay and adjoining area moved northwards and crossed Odisha coast close to Paradip and was centred at mid night last night over coastal Odisha and adjoining area and now lies over Gangetic west Bengal and adjoining Odisha and Southwestern part of Bangladesh.

It is likely to move in a north or northeasterly direction further and weaken gradually, the forecast said.

Under the influence of land depression over Odisha coast and adjoining area, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions during next 24 hrs commencing 12:00pm.

The Met office also said the rain may continue till Saturday and the weather is likely to improve on Sunday.

Besides, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no three due to the depression formed in the Bay.
