President, PM express shock at deaths in landslides
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed deep shock at the loss of lives caused by the overnight landslides in the hilly districts of Bandarban, Chittagong and Rangamati.
In a condolence message, President Hamid prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved families.
The president also conveyed deep sympathy to the families of the army personnel killed in landslides while carrying out rescue operations amid adverse weather.
President Hamid also asked the authorities concerned to complete the rescue operations promptly in the affected areas and ensure treatment of those injured in landslides.
In a separate message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the deaths of people in the landslides in the hilly districts that resulted after the daylong rain yesterday influenced by a depression in the Bay, according to a press release issued by Prime Minister’s Office.
The premier also asked all concerned to take immediate steps to rescue those who are trapped under mud and rubbles and ensure their proper treatment, and directed for taking necessary measures for the last ritual of those killed in the mudslides.
Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia also expressed shock at the deaths of civilians and army personnel and conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved families, according to a BNP press release.
At least 133 people including four army men have so far been killed in separate incidents of landslides in Rangamati, Chittagong and Bandarban triggered by heavy rains.
