Bangladesh re-elected executive board member of Unesco

Bangladesh has been re-elected as a member of the executive board of Unesco for the third consecutive term for fulfilling core mandates of the organisation in different fields including education and culture.

The election was held at the Unesco headquarters in Paris on November 8, said a press release of the education ministry today.

As one of the three main governing bodies of the Unesco, the executive board is responsible for execution of all the programmes adopted by the Unesco General Conference, the release read.

The 39th session of the general conference of Unesco has elected a total of 27 member states from six electoral groups.

As an elected member of the executive board of the Unesco, Bangladesh will be serving its responsibilities from 2017 to 2021. This is for the seventh term Bangladesh has become a member of the executive board of the specialised agency of the United Nations.

Bangladesh became a member of Unesco on October 27, 1972. Since then, it has been playing a positive and constructive role in fulfilling Unesco’s core mandates in different fields including education, culture, science, communication and information.

Recently the historic 7th March speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been inscribed in Unesco’s international register as a ‘Memory of the World’.

In its inscription, Unesco also included Jamdani Weaving and Mangal Shobhajatra on Pahela Boishakh in the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013 and 2016 respectively.

One of the most remarkable achievements for the history of Bangladesh, Unesco recognised the 1952’s language movement and proclaimed 21st February as the International Mother Language Day.

In 2015, Unesco recognised our International Mother Language Institute as a Unesco Category II Centre.
