Yet another journalist has been made accused of the section 57, sued by a colleague, for alleged libel against a local lawmaker in Khulna.

Abdul Latif Morol, a local reporter of “Daily Prabaha” was arrested from his residence in the district’s Dumuria upazila in the wee hours of today around 2:30am.

Stationed in Khulna, Morol is also a contributor to rights-based online portal “Dalit Voice”.

Local journalist Subrata Faujder filed the lawsuit with Dumuria Police Station around 9:00pm last night alleging that Morol defamed a lawmaker via a Facebook post.

Dumuria police Officer-in-Charge Sukumar Biswas said the case alleged Morol published a post demeaning local MP and junior minister for fisheries and livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda.

Morol had allegedly criticised the lawmaker for the livestock and poultry he distributed among poor people, some of which did not last long and died soon after being distributed.

Journalists have strongly condemned the section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act saying it’s a bar to free speech and univocally demanded its removal.

Several journalists have been made victims of the law in Bangladesh so far despite government assurance that the provision will not be misused.
