The authorities of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) today closed the university for indefinite period amid students’ protest.

The decision was taken in an emergency meeting fearing deterioration of law and order situation on the university, said Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Jahangir Alam told our Chittagong correspondent.

The male students were asked to vacate dormitories by 3:00pm today while the female students will have to leave their dorms by 10:00am tomorrow, said Fazlur Rahman, assistant director (Public Relations) of Cuet.

Meanwhile, the academic activities of the post-graduation level of the university will be continued as usual, he added.

The students have been demonstrating on the campus for the last five days to press home their several-point demands, paralysing the university’s academic activities.

The demands include: removal of Students Welfare Director and ensuring safe transportation facilities.

The students began demonstration after the Students Welfare Director Prof Dr Ashutose Saha allegedly harassed some student while they were organising a human chain protesting death of their fellow in a road accident on Chittagong-Kaptai road on March 29.
