After lead and pesticide, researchers have now found detergent in milk available in the kitchen market for consumers across the country.

This was revealed today after conducting tests of seven samples of widely sold pasteurised milk and three samples of unpasteurised milk.

Dhaka University’s Pharmacy Faculty and Biomedical Research Centre jointly tested the samples and unveiled its report today.

Prof ABM Faruque, director of Biomedical Research Centre, unveiled the findings at Pharmacy Lecture Theatre in Dhaka University.

Previously, a government survey found lead and pesticides in milk and that the majority of raw and packaged milk do not meet standard safety criteria.

ANTIBIOTIC FOR HUMANS FOUND

Researchers also found antibiotic meant for humans in the milk samples, leading to conclusions that it was administered on the cows.

“Antibiotics for humans and animals are completely different. We need to stop the use of human antibiotics on animals,” Prof Faruque said.

He warned that the rampant use of antibiotics meant for humans on animals can have fatal consequences on human beings.
