Ex-councilor among 2 killed in Habiganj, Feni ‘gunfights’
A former ward councilor and an alleged drug peddler were killed in two separate “gunfights” in Habiganj and Feni early today.
One of the deceased Yunus Miah, 40, was a former councillor of ward No. 9 in Chunarughat municipality of Chunarughat upazila.
On secret information that a gang of drug traders was trading Yaba, a team of police conducted a drive at Magurunda village, said Azmiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station.
Sensing presence of police, the drug traders attacked the law enforcers with sharp weapons, forcing them to retaliate that triggered the “shootout”.
The gunbattle left Yunus bullet injured.
Later, he was rushed to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Police said that Yunus had long been involved with Yaba trading.
A police member was also injured in the gunfight, said the OC.
In Feni
Meanwhile, Anwar Hossain Raju, 25, was a notorious drug peddler who is accused in 10 cases including robbery, rape and arms cases, Mintanur Rahman, operation officer Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) - 7, told The Daily Star.
The gunfight ensued when the drug peddlers opened fire at a team of Rab-7 which was conducting a raid in Dharmapur area, the Rab official said.
The team of the elite force recovered five local and foreign firearms and ammunition from the spot, he added.
