Faruk murder: MP Rana gets bail
The High Court today granted bail to Tangail’s Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case, clearing the way for him to walk out of jail.
Earlier, the court had denied him bail in the same case for four times on different reasons.
Today, the HC granted ad-interim bail to Rana and also issued a rule asking the government to explain why Rana should not be granted regular bail in this case.
The bench of Justice Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah came up with the order and rule following a petition filed by the accused lawmaker seeking bail in the case.
Rana’s lawyer Advocate Rusho Mostafa told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar to his client’s release from jail now following the HC order.
Rana is ill and is currently being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Shaikh AKM Moniruzzmana Kabir told The Daily Star that the government will move an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for staying the HC order of bail to Rana.
The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader of Tangail, was found on January 18, 2013. Later, a murder case was filed in this connection by Faruk's wife Nahar Ahmed with Tangail Model Police Station.
Police have found evidence of involvement of Rana and his three brothers in the murder, according to a report published in the Bangla daily Prothom Alo on September 14, 2014.
Rana, the AL lawmaker from Tangail constituency-3, surrendered to a Tangail court on September 18 last year in connection with the murder case.
Rana and his three brothers have been expelled from the district AL on charges of various allegations.
