5 missing after falling from trawler in Shitalakkhya
Five people went missing after falling from a passenger-carrying trawler in Shitalakkhya river of Narayanganj last night.
A team of 13 divers of local Fire Service and Civil Defence have been conducting a rescue operation in the river along Central Kheyaghat area since 6:00am, our correspondent reports.
The divers have not been able to rescue any of the five till 11:30pm when the report was filed, the correspondent reports quoting Arifur Rahman, station officer of Narayanganj fire service.
The missing passengers are Osman Gani,40, Johny,22, Sujan,19, Emon,22 and Deen Islam, 35.
The trawler left Central Kheyaghat for Madanganj Kheyaghat around 9:15 last night with around 100 passengers on board when it hit a launch anchored nearby.
“The roof of the trawler broke following the collision and several fell into the river” said Arifur Rahman.
Some of them swam back to the shore and some were rescued with another launch soon after the incident.
Later, the family members of the five missing persons reported to the fire service department.
