Graft: ACC suggests action against JP MP

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Election Commission (EC) to take legal action against the Jatiya Party Lawmaker of Mymensingh-5 constituency for concealing wealth information worth Tk 54.56 lakh.

Signed by ACC’s Secretary Dr Md Shamsul Arefin, the letter was sent to the Election Commission secretary today, sources at the ACC told The Daily Star.

The Daily Star obtained a copy of the letter which reads: “while examining an allegation against Mymensingh-5 lawmaker Salah Uddin Ahmed Mukti over amassing wealth illegally, ACC finds that the MP submitted an affidavit to the Election Commission on December 2, 2013 where he mentioned of possessing moveable and immovable properties worth Tk 4.5 lakh”.

However, five months prior of submission of the affidavit, Salah Uddin submitted wealth statement to a tax office on June 30, 2013, mentioning that he possesses movable and immovable properties worth Tk 56.03 lakh.

During the enquiry, ACC also found that Salah Uddin got wealth Tk 3.03 lakh from his father but he did not mention it either in the EC’s affidavit or in the tax return file.

As a result, the commission views that by submitting such an “untrue affidavit,” the lawmaker has done unethical job.

“In this context, the Anti-Corruption Commission has requested the EC to take necessary action against the lawmaker according to the relevant law,” reads the letter.
