‘Gunfight’: 2 killed in B’Baria, Jessore
A suspected robber and an alleged drug peddler were killed in separate incidents of “gunfight” in Brahmanbaria and Jessore today.
In Brahmanbaria, suspected robber, Selim Mia, 32, son of Tazul Islam of Sadar upazila was killed in Sarail, our local correspondent reports.
Accused in eight cases, Selim was detained while he along with his cohorts was taking preparation to commit a robbery at Bertola village, said Rupok Kumer Saha, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station.
His cohorts carried out an attack to free Selim, triggering a gunfight that left him dead and five policemen injured, the OC said. Two pipe guns and four spears were recovered from the spot.
The wounded policemen were: Assistant Sub-Inspectors Farid and Karim, and Constables Shahdat Hossain, Ashraful and Zahir.
He said Selim died in the shot fired by his cohorts. The body was sent to sadar hospital for autopsy.
In Jessore, an alleged drug peddler Sabbir Hossain, 25, son of Saidul Islam of Bagharpara upazila, was killed while attempting to flee from police detention around 2:00am.
On information of infighting between two groups of drug peddlers at Ayapur area in the upazila, law enforcers rushed to the spot and took charge, said Bagharpara Police Station’s OC Motiur Rahman.
Police found the body of Sabbir, who remained handcuffed after being caught last night from his house, on the spot after the incident.
“He [Sabbir] came in line with the fire while trying to flee,” the OC added, saying the body was sent to Jessore Medical College morgue for autopsy.
A total of 107 bottles of phensedyl was seized from the spot.
