‘Robber' killed in Noakhali ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali early today.

Dceased Shahadat Hossain Swapan, 39, was accused in 23 cases filed with different police stations and also a member of an inter-district robber’s gang, said police.

He was the son of Belayet Hossain, a resident of Rampur union in the upazila, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Companyganj Police Station, said a team of police arrested Shahadat from Chowmuhani area of Begumganj upazila in the same district yesterday evening.

After the arrest, Shahadat revealed that his gang members would commit a robbery at Chhotodholi village in Musapur union early hours of today.

When a police team along with him reached the village to arrest other robbers, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, triggering a gunfight.

Shahadat suffered injuries with bullets during the gunfight. Later, he was taken to Companyganj Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.

Six policemen were also injured during the gun battle, said the OC.

Police recovered a pipe gun, nine bullets and sharp weapons from the spot.
