Habiganj journos boycott cops for assault on reporter
Journalists in Habiganj toady vowed to boycott police and all their news, demanding expulsion of an officer who allegedly assaulted a reporter last month.
The announcement was made today at Habiganj Press Club, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting Rasel Chowdhury, general secretary of the club.
On May 31, some policemen forcefully picked up Shirajul Islam Jibon, reporter of a television channel and tried to implicate him in false cases. He was tortured for an entire night and framed in a false drug case, according to the journalists.
Since then, the journalists have been moving for a four-point demand, including withdrawal of the false cases against Shiraj, punishment of the policemen, compensation for the harassment and a formal apology to the reporters.
Following the incident, on Friday, a probe committee was formed and was told to submit a report in three working days.
Shirajul is now out on bail and receiving treatment at Habiganj Sadar Hospital.
