ICT lauds move to observe Genocide Day

Painting by Shahabuddin Ahmed

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today lauded the government decision to observe March 25 as Genocide Day to recognise the brutality carried out by Pakistani Army on the unarmed Bengalis in 1971.

While delivering a judgment in a case filed against two Kishoreganj Razakars, the tribunal said the recognition will inspire the new generation to go with the spirit of the Liberation War.

“Finally, in remembrance of such horrific and atrocious activities that resulted in ‘genocide’, mass killing, sexual invasion, torture, confinement the day of 25th March has been declared ‘Genocide Day’,” the three-member tribunal led by Justice Anwarul Haque said.

“This laudable recognition obviously will make especially the new generation enthused to go with the spirit of the war of liberation and it shall inspire them to be acquainted with the history of our hard earned independence indeed,” reads the judgment.

On March 11, the Jatiya Sangsad passed a resolution to observe March 25 as Genocide Day. Later, the cabinet approved the resolution, completing all formalities to recognise the brutal genocide committed on this day in 1971.

From this year, Bangladesh started observing March 25 as Genocide Day, the day when the Pakistan army unleashed its war machine against the sleeping population of the then East Pakistan.
