Stone Extraction: 3 workers killed in Sylhet landslide
Three workers were killed in a landslide while extracting stone illegally yesterday in Sylhet’s Companiganj upazila.
Police identified the trio as Kancha Miah, 60, Jahir Hossain, 36, and Afaz Uddin, 35, of Sunamganj district, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting Dilip Nath, inspector (investigation) of Companiganj Police Station.
Some workers were working at the stone quarry at Shah Arefin Tila when a chunk of mud fell on them around 11:00am yesterday, leaving five of them injured.
Kancha died on the way to hospital, said Dilip Nath.
Police and locals recovered the bodies of Jahir and Afaz from the spot around 1:00am today.
Abdul Gani, one of the four injured, was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the inspector said.
Meanwhile, police detained Kala Mia, who hired the workers for extracting stone.
On February 25, five stone workers died in a landslide at illegal stone quarry at Kalairag of the same upazila.
The death toll from stone quarry accidents reached 20 in the first two month of the year, while the toll was 32 last year, according to media reports.
