Jubo League leader hacked to death by rivals in Ctg
A Jubo League activist was killed in an attack allegedly by his rivals over previous enmity at Sitakunda in Chattogram yesterday.
Sayed Md Dawud Samrat, 38, president of Sitakunda municipality ward-4 (Maddham Mohadebpur), was stabbed to death around 3:00pm in Bholagiri Kali Mandir area of the upazila, said police quoting witnesses.
Samrat's family alleged that a local lawmaker was involved in the murder.
Faisal Hossain, younger brother of the victim, said members of local Jubo League and Chhatra League were supposed to congratulate the lawmaker after he secured victory for the second time in the constituency on Sunday.
The programme was rescheduled for Tuesday as the lawmaker went to Dhaka yesterday, Faisal added.
He further said, “A gang of 25 to 35 local goons led by Dhakat Shahid swooped on my brother and hacked him with sharp weapons when he and two others reached the area. Samrat was left critically injured.”
Later, doctors declared him dead when he was taken to CMCH.
Two Chhatra League men -- Omol Debnath, 26, and Md Sazzad, 27, -- were injured in the incident. They were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), said Alauddin Talukdar, assistant sub-inspector of CMCH Police Outpost.
Sitakunda upazila Chairman SM Al Mamun told The Daily Star “killer Dakat Shahid” used to run narcotics business and other criminal activities in the area with help from the local lawmaker's men. Samrat used to oppose those.
The criminals killed Samrat as he raised his voice, he added.
Meanwhile, one Mofakharul Alam Chowdhury, 40, was stabbed on the CMCH premises when he came to see Samrat.
Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station, said they were conducting drives at different places to arrest the killers.
No case was filed as of 10:15pm when the report was filed.
