An activist of ruling Awami League was killed in a factional clash in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj today hours before a Dhaka court sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to five years in jail.

The deceased was identified as Shumon Mia, 30, son of Monu Mia of Gondhobpur area, reports our local correspondent.

Over 50 other activists were also injured in the clash between the supporters of AL lawmaker (Narayanganj-1) Golam Dastagir Gazi and Kayetpara Union Parishad Chairman Rafiqul Islam Rafiq at Kanchan Bridge 11:00 am.

The both of the group gathered there to prevent BNP men from coming Dhaka ahead of a verdict of the court which later sentenced Khaleda to five years in jail in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

At one stage, the factions engaged in altercation, triggering the clash that left Sumon, a supporter of MP Gazi, dead on the spot and 50 others of the both groups injured, said Ismail Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Rupganj Police Station.  

Police later brought the situation under control, he said, adding that the injured were taken to different hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
