Lightning kills 12 in 5 districts
At least 12 people including two siblings were killed in separate lightning strikes in Mymensingh, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Sunamganj and Jhenidah today.
In Mymensingh, two brothers -- Asad Mia, 45, and Engraj Mia, 40, -- and school boy Tamim, 14, were killed after lightning struck them, reports our local correspondent quoting police.
“Lightning struck the siblings when they were working in their paddy field, leaving the duo dead on the spot,” said Shawkat Alam, officer-in-charge of Dhobaura Police Station.
In another incident, Tamim sustained serious injuries as he was hit by lightning while was playing football with his friends around 2:30pm. Critically injured Tamim was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
In Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj, Subeda Begum, 40, and Jamil Hossain, 45, were killed in separate lightning incidents, reports our local correspondent quoting police.
They died around noon when lighting hit them, said Sakhwat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Araihazar Police Station.
In Chandpur, Selina Begum, 40, and her son Yeasin Sarder, 15, of Dhalikandi village died when lightning struck them, reports our local correspondent quoting police.
In Sunamganj, Shamim Pathan, 34, of Durloverchar village in Jamalganj upazila and Abul Layes, 44, of Kizirgaon village in Chhatak upzaila were killed in separate incidents of lightning, reports our local correspondent.
They died on the spot as thunderbolts struck them while they were lifting sandstone in Sunali river, said Atikur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station.
