Manikganj cop found dead in river after going missing

A policeman has been found dead in Manikganj Sadar, 20 hours after he went missing in a river while chasing down a convicted drug peddler.

Constable Shahinur Rahman’s body was found from Kaliganga River at Joynagar, Manikganj municipality, around 1:30pm, our local correspondent reports quoting Rifat Rahman Shamim, superintendent of Manikganj police.

Shahinur Rahman, son of Wahidur Rahman of Gohailbari village under Ashulia upazila of Dhaka district, joined the police department in 2006.

Officer-in-Charge of Manikganj Sadar Police Station Rokibuzzaman said, Shahinur went to Ghior upazila of Manikganj around 5:30pm last evening with a team to arrest Abdus Salam, a convicted drug peddler.

After the arrest, Salam gave a slip to the police and jumped into the River Kaliganga at Joynagar. Constable Shahinur followed in pursuit and jumped in the river.

He was missing since then.
