Jubo League man shot dead
A Jubo League leader was shot and hacked to death yesterday in Akua Morolpara area of the town.
The victim was Sajjad Alam Sheikh Azad alias Azad Sheikh, 35, son of Amir Uddin Sheikh of the area. Azad was a member of Jubo League city convening committee.
There had been a longstanding dispute between Azad and Sheikh Farid, a Jubo League activist, over supremacy in the area.
“A group allegedly led by Farid shot Azad and also hacked him,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shahrier Miazi, quoting locals.
Police detained four people for their suspected involvement in the killing, said Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC Investigation) Khandaker Shaker Ahmed.
Azad was accused in 12 cases filed with the police station, the OC said.
Awami League district unit Secretary Advocate Moazzem Hossain Babul alleged that some vested quarters were behind the factions and they did not take steps to stop them from clashing.
He condemned the killing and said the killers and their masterminds should be brought to book immediately.
