4 killed in road crashes in 3 districts

Four persons were killed, including two brothers, and 34 others were injured in four separate road accidents in Natore, Bogura and Manikganj districts since last night.

In Natore, a farmer was killed and four others were injured as a pick-up van hit their rickshaw-van from behind on Dhaka-Natore highway this noon.

The incident took place in Ahmedpur area under Baraigram upazila of Natore, reports our local correspondent quoting police.

The deceased was identified as Dewan Ali, 37, son of Siraj Uddin of Aurail village under Natore Sadar upazila, said Mozammel Haque, in-charge of Jhalmolia Highway Police Outpost.

A pick-up hit a rickshaw-van from behind leaving five people injured, the official said. Locals rushed them to Natore Sadar Hospital where Dewan Ali succumbed to his injuries, he said.

Police seized the pick-up van but its driver and his helper managed to flee, Mozammel added.

In Bogura, a road repair worker died when a truck and a bus collided head-on in Chonka area on the Dhaka-Bogura highway today.

The deceased was identified as Md Farid Uddin, 45, from Chakvali village of Bogura’s Shahajanpur upazila.

A Nilphamari-bound bus of Shathi Paribahan from Dhaka collided with a Dhaka-bound truck, a witness said.  

During the accident, the bus ran over Farid Uddin while he was engaged with repairing works on the highway.

The vehicles were seized by the highway police but their drivers managed to flee, said Md. Humayan Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Police Station.

In another incident in Bogura, two brothers were killed in a road accident in Nandigram upazila last night.

The accident took place in Pandidpukur area of the upazila when their shallow engine-run vehicle overturned around 11.00pm, reports our local correspondent quoting police.

The deceased were identified as Md Angur Ali, 45, and Habibur Rahman,19, sons of Ayez Uddin of Toyebpur village in the upazila, said Shawkat Kabir, officer-in-charge of Nandigram Police Station.  

The injured driver of the vehicle managed to flee the spot, he added. 

In Manikganj, at least 30 people were injured as two buses collided head-on on Dhaka-Aricha Highway this noon.

Among the injured, three were in critical condition, reports our local correspondent.

The incident took place near Mahadebpur bus terminal in Shibalay upazila when a Dhaka-bound bus of Nilachal Paribahan collided head-on with a bus of Sheba Green Line coming from the opposite direction, leaving 30 passengers injured, said Md Yamin Ud Doula, in-charge of Borongail Highway Police Outpost.

Police rescued the injured and admitted them to different hospitals in the district for treatment, the official said, adding that three of them were critically injured.

Movement of vehicle was halted on the highway for two hours following the incident, causing 10-kilometre long tailback, he said.

The buses were being removed from the road using wreckers till filing of this report at 4:00pm.
