4 to walk gallows for killing schoolboy in Gazipur
A court in Gazipur today convicted four people, including two siblings, and sentenced them to death for killing a schoolboy at Pubail in the city in August 2004.
The convicts are Iqbal Hossain Bhuiyan, 32, and his brother Md Shakil Bhuiyan, 30, sons of Abdul Hamid Bhuiyan; Zaman Sarker, 32, son of Afzal Hossain Sarker, residents of Haribari Tech area of Pubail; and Abu Sayem, 34, son of Mujibur Rahman, hailing from Latabor village of Kurigram district.
The court also fined them TK 10,000 each. According to the prosecution, convict Zaman had sent a proposal to marry Rokhsana, daughter of Hasan Khandker, resident of the area. But, Rokhsana's family turned down the proposal.
Angered by the refusal, Zaman abducted Rokhsana's brother Mamum, 15, a class eight student of local Bhadun High School, on August 10, 2004.
Later, the victim's father filed a general diary with Joydebpur Police Station.
On August 13, three days after abduction, police recovered Mamun's body from a septic tank adjacent to local Shahjahan Bhuiyan's house.
The victim's father then filed a murder case with the police station against seven people.
After examining the records and 15 witnesses, Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict. The Judge, however, acquitted three other accused as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
